About This Place

Located in the heart of Richmond at 412 E Grace St, Wong Gonzalez serves up a bold and inventive fusion of Mexican and Asian flavors that promises a dining experience unlike any other. This vibrant Mexican restaurant expertly blends spice, zest, and umami in dishes that not only delight the palate but engage the senses deeply.

Wong Gonzalez’s menu is a treasure trove of creative staples that satisfy cravings for both hearty and nuanced tastes. Standouts include the Wong's Pots, such as the Mongolian Chicken Pot—a wok-tossed medley of tender chicken, mushrooms, zucchini, bell peppers, and broccoli all enveloped in a sweet and savory Mongolian sauce. The dish is crowned with crispy jalapenos and fresh cilantro, accompanied by fragrant Wong rice enriched with garlic oil and lemongrass, offering a harmony of textures and bold aroma. Seafood lovers will find bliss in the Pimienta Negra Shrimp Pot, where jumbo shrimp soak up a spicy black pepper sauce laced with black beans, edamame, peppers, and onions, creating layers of vibrant heat and earthiness that burst with every bite.

Complement these signature dishes with tempting sides like creamy refried beans, crispy tortilla chips, and perfectly fried rice tinged with cilantro and pepper mix. Beverage options like Mexican Coke and an alluring assortment of Jarritos sodas add an authentic, refreshing twist to the meal, while unique choices such as Maine Root Ginger Beer and Navy Hill Sparkling Blood Orange offer a sophisticated palate cleanser between bites.

The ambiance at Wong Gonzalez strikes an inviting balance—spacious yet intimate—with indoor seating that captures a modern vibe and a lively bar area that’s perfect for unwinding. Outdoor seating options lend a relaxed, convivial atmosphere, ideal for casual gatherings or lively dinners. Reviewers consistently praise the attentive and witty service, which heightens the experience by pairing friendliness with professionalism.

Patrons frequently highlight how this fusion concept far exceeds expectations. Pamela Patterson raves about the perfectly tender calamari with its crisp tempura coating and luscious accompanying sauce, while also describing the Pimienta Negra Shrimp Pot as “delicately balanced in flavor and spice.” Others find the creative taco flights a delightful journey through fresh, well-executed Mexican fare with an Asian twist, although some note the salsas lean toward milder profiles—perfect for diners who prefer subtlety over overwhelming heat. Vegetarians are also well-catered for; dishes like the Gyoza Vegetarian, Arriba Ramen Noodles, and Vegan Mexican Sauté showcase how thoughtfully crafted and satisfying plant-based options can be within this fusion framework.

From the moment you walk in, there’s a palpable passion for culinary innovation marrying two vibrant cuisines with precision and soul. Whether you’re indulging in the slightly sweet, comforting tones of the mango fried rice with shrimp as described by MsB Cheet, or savoring the unique desserts that blend cultural influences as Sravani M notes, Wong Gonzalez delivers an experience that feels both fresh and familiar. It’s a place where every plate tells a story, inviting you to explore bold new flavors in an atmosphere that feels like a lively, warm embrace for food lovers of all stripes.

For anyone seeking a memorable dinner or a casual bite with a twist, Wong Gonzalez stands out as a destination that elevates Mexican dining through inventive fusion, exceptional service, and a welcoming ambiance. Each visit invites diners to dive into a richly layered culinary world that excites, satisfies, and inspires.

We absolutely loved this place! The food was just as amazing as the service! We shared the calamari which was tender inside its tempura batter and accompanied by a delicious sauce with a very flavorful relish underneath. For our entrees, I chose the pimienta negra shrimp pot and my husband had a flight of tacos. My shrimp bowl was so full of delicately balanced flavor and spice. My husband said all four tacos were really good (the fish taco was his favorite) and he enjoyed the seasoned chips they came with. We almost never order dessert, but my husband ordered the crispy tequila cake. I had one bite and found it to be light with a nice crisp. My husband loved it!

They have a very unique fusion of Asian and Mexican. Fairly good sized place with a bar and outdoor seating. Wasn't overly busy when we went. Our server was fantastic. Super attentive and quippy. We order the 3 dip and flight of tacos. I thought the salsa and guacamole were pretty bland. Wasn't overly impressed with it. They tacos were good. Everything was very fresh. Think I liked the shrimp taco the best, but all were tasty. I can see this place getting packed in the evening. Want to try some different type of things, This is a Great place to do that

It was a great experience over all, good food , good service and good atmosphere. It’s hard to have a fusion of these two cuisines but it was very well executed. The dessert was very unique and yum combining both cuisines. The sauce for the wings was very good. The best part was that the price point was very good for the great food served.

I came here today with my daughter for lunch. I ordered the mango fried rice and added shrimp. She ordered General Wong's fried chicken burrito. Both were delicious. They both had a slightly sweet flavor for those whose taste buds tend to favor this--like mine do. I loved my dish. It came out nice and hot. I loved the rice, edamame, and everything else about it. It was so much food I couldn't finish it all. My daughter couldn't finish hers either. You definitely get your money's worth. I also saw many customers coming in for lunch to eat as well. I always look out for that particular detail! All in all, this is really good stuff. We also tried the fried tequila cake. FANTASTIC. For those who like funnel cake you MUST try this. Again, good good stuff.

Amazing food… I went to this eatery for lunch with my friend. We were searching for a restaurant with unique vegetarian options as my friend is vegetarian. Wong Gonzalez didn’t let us down. The ambience was excellent. We had Gyoza Vegetarian, Arriba Ramen Noodles and Vegan Mexican Sauté. We really liked their Latin-Asian fusion food. The serving size was adequate. The staff was attentive and helped us in selecting vegetarian food. I would definitely love to return and taste their non-vegetarian options.

The food was pretty darn good! Not much business on a Friday afternoon. Our server was pretty attentive, and food came out fast. I liked my steak stir fry, but what really shone was the calamari. It was crispy and salty/savory with an amazing dipping sauce. For a fusion restaurant, they do a good mix of Chinese and Mexican! The restaurant’s interior was dimly lit but pretty swanky.

Food options were unique. The fusion concept was well carried out with flavors that were delicious. Service was great. The fried rice, the calamari, the plantains and the tacos were all great!

This place is incredible!! I was visiting Richmond, and a colleague recommended this place, so I tried it out. Not your ordinary Mexican-a Asian fusion place! I tried their Taco Flight, which includes four tacos of your choice to try them all + chips/salsa on the side, and their Fatty Fajita Bao. The flavors did not disappoint! The price is just right, and the serving is generous! I love the vibe, and customer service is impeccable! You must try it!!
